We are an owner operated store offering a carefully selected group of wines from around the world. We like to call them “wines with soul”
While most the producers we write about seem to be centuries deep in history, Pra is relatively new. The winery started in the early 1980’s. That said, they quickly became one of the benchmark producers of Soave in the Veneto. Those familiar with the winery will be quick to point out they make stunning reds too. Most of the Valpolicellas we taste are fuller and darker fruited, which is fine, but not what I feel like drinking this time of year. Pra, has vineyards that are high in altitude and sit on a rich glacial runoff of limestone. This helps the winery produce reds that are very elegant, with crunchy acidity and a lot of mineral spice complexity. It's like Italian Cru Beaujolais. The organic vineyards are hand harvested in early to mid-October. The grapes are then air dried for about 20 days before being crushed and put into stainless steel tanks to ferment. Once malo is complete, the wine goes into large botti for 3-6 months before bottling. When I heard the part about air-drying, my mind was made up on how it should taste. I thought it would be raisin-y at the very least. Not so! I had to taste it again as I was really quite taken. This wine is bright, red fruited, looks like a pinot in the glass, 12.5% alcohol and minerally with spice. It's really quite stunning. I'm excited to drink this wine with a pork shoulder or some double cut barbequed pork chops. Though on it's own is perfectly fine too.

Owner Michael Teer has worked at Pike and Western since 1980, buying it in 1991. While still primarily a brick and mortar store our online presence is meant to not only enhance the business but give a sense of what the personality of the shop is. While wine is certainly Michael’s business it is also deeply integrated into his life.
